Despite the glorious colors of coated drusies, there are some artists who are
drawn to drusies that are uncoated, surrounded by the quartz agate in which they
are found. Agate contains silica, the material that's used to make glass, so
many of these pieces are fully or partially translucent. Others have an
alabaster-like matrix of creamy white, while the darks shade from brown and grey
to charcoal. All have good sparkle
and polished backs. The little imperfections are
part of the nature of the stones.
What's wonderful about these pieces is that the druzy is completely
surrounded by agate with rounded edges, so it's easy to bezel-set or wire-wrap.
I was absolutely thrilled to
hit the motherlode of agate drusies at this fall's Denver Gem Show, so I'm
posting as many as possible to give you a great selection.

bottom is the highest area in the piece. Note that this weighs more than an
ounce.
