The following are websites that I think are worth a visit. This page is still under construction. If you have a suggestion of a site to add, please e-mail me. If you make jewelry using Heart of Stone cabochons, you're eligible to be listed here as a fellow artist and friend.
Educators Mary Chuduk: Mary is one of the finest art teachers in the country. I can say that with authority, not just because she is my sister, but also because she has tons of teaching experience and is a professional artist in her own right. Mary's specialty is enameling, the art of applying glass to metal. She gives workshops in the U.S. and abroad, and is scheduled to teach at Arrowmont and Penland in the near future. She also is available to teach to groups such as jewelry clubs, and she conducts enameling classes out of her studio in the Phoenix area. I can guarantee that if you sign up for one of her classes, you'll emerge with your head happily crammed with information, and inspiration. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced enameller looking for hot new techniques, Mary is the one to see. Recently, Mary has written and
published a limited-edition book on enamels. If you're interested in an overview
of enameling, lavishly illustrated with color photos (many of them of Mary's
work), or if you want to get into one of her classes, go to her website. To order the book, click on the "publications" button on her home page.
You can also e-mail her from her website about classes. Don McKinney: Don is a
master glass artist who teaches beadmaking and paperweight creation at his
studio in Glendale, AZ. He is an excellent teacher and manufactures and sells some of his own equipment.
I've taken a couple of his classes and recommend him highly. Vicki Day: Vicki is
owner of the Stained Glass Shop in Glendale, AZ, a wonderful full-service shop.
She and her staff teach both beginners' and intermediate classes in stained
glass and glass fusing. It's the place where I took my very first fusing course!
Vicki also teaches on both the East and West coast. The Mendocino Art Center:
Imagine studying art in one of the world's most spectacular seaside
locations--Mendocino, on the rocky coastline of Northern California. The
Mendocino Art Center offers weekend and 5-day workshops in fine art--watercolor, oils, plein-air
painting--jewelry and metalsmithing, sculpture, pottery, fiber arts, and
computer design. Workshops are usually taught by visiting artists who are tops
in their field. I've taken several courses here, learned a great deal, and had a
marvelous time as well.
Professional Organizations SNAG: The Society of
North American Goldsmiths It doesn't matter if you work in gold, or
silver, or PMC, SNAG is the professional organization to join if you're a
jewelry maker. Metalsmith Magazine comes with your membership, and SNAG's annual
meeting brings together fellow artists for idea exchange and workshops. Special
deals for students. The Glass Art Society:
GAS is open to anyone who works with glass--hot, warm, cold, beadmaking, the
works. They offer a newsletter and a great annual conference, usually paired
with open studios in the host city.
Information Found Here Ganoksin: This is absolutely the best place to find information on any aspect of metalsmithing that you can imagine. Articles, analyses, special topics. Free. http://www.ganoksin.com/ The Orchid Forum:
This is a metalsmithing forum and information exchange existing in conjunction
with Ganoksin. Have a question about the best way to do something? Use Orchid to
query hundreds of other artists and get an answer. Register free on line and ask
to get their e-newsletter. Orchid members can meet fellow artists at their big annual
dinner at the Tucson Gem Show. Everything about Diamonds:
This is a website hundreds of links to just about every known diamond and
diamond-related site. Great for learning about diamond history, how to evaluate
diamonds, and linking to diamond dealers.
Fellow Artists and Friends Bearclaw Native Indian Jewelry is a home-based Pt. Hardy British Columbia, Canada, business owned by Marlene & Frank Marasco. They have unique and intriguing finished jewelry for sale on their site. http://www.bearclaw.bc.ca/ Buzzard Bear Family Forge:
These are great folks--blacksmiths who make whimsical sculptures and imaginative home decor pieces from
found objects. Onatah:
This is a wonderful website to visit, with lovely Native-American-style jewelry
and hand-woven baskets, all made from natural materials by my friend Angel.
Plus, there's great music to listen to on every page!
