This gorgeous stone is a relative newcomer to the mineral scene: Its single source in Russia was discovered less than thirty years ago. The best charoite (pronounced char as in charcoal, oh- ite) specimens are chatoyant, which should dictate that it be placed on our chatoyants page. But the purples are so beautiful I decided to keep them on this page. Charoite may contain patches of black (Aegerine), yellowish orange (Tinaksite) and also translucent crystals (Microcline Feldspar). Hardness of this stone is 5. Those in the know claim that wearing Charoite promotes self-esteem, contentment, and inner peace. All stones have satin-finish back. Purples are bluer in daylight. Click on photos for a better look.

I came across this lovely stone at the Tucson show. It is mined in South Africa, and is an aluminum borosilicate. It is primarily a dusky blue, although some pieces have a deeper blue as well. Although it looks soft, its hardness is 7, equal to quartz.

I just love these with their gorgeous blue color. Lapis comes from Afghanistan, and all of it is mined so deep in the mountains that it must be all carried out on the backs of donkeys! The warfare and strife in that country has made lapis more difficult to obtain, so these pieces are really special. Some of the pieces are pure gem-quality blue, while others are sprinkled through with shiny pyrite. Satin-finish backs. Click on photos to see these magnificent pieces better. I swear that purple stones are the most difficult to photograph--the purples come out looking blue. I struggled and struggled with these photos and they still don't do justice to the beauty of the stones. I was working under a mix of incandescent and halogen light, so the sugilite's purple had red in it. In daylight these stones have more of a blue-violet. Either way, the purple is just stunning. Azurite is a mineral associated with copper. I haven't seen much of it around lately, but its cobalt-blue color is unmistakable. Sometimes it is found mixed with the greens of malachite, producing amazingly beautiful stones.
