A rock isn't something you ordinarily associate with light transmission, unless it's a faceted stone. But on this page, I'm proud to present cabochons with silicated areas that are either translucent (allowing light but not images to come through), or transparent (clear enough to read through). Design options for these include: Wire-wrapping, bezel-setting without a back, drilling, or mounting against a black or colored background. Unless otherwise noted, all of these are polished on both sides. NOTE: These have been deliberately photographed with some light coming in from behind them. Tranquility 2 Glistening Grass Quartz This type of rutilated quartz is quite unusual: The rutiles look like wet grass sparkling in the sunlight, with thin shafts of silver twinkling along as you turn the stone in the light. Some pieces feature flashing black rutiles of hematite, while others are a beautiful wine-red. In some pieces, the quartz is crystal-clear, while others feature shimmering "mirrors," swirls, or areas of color, akin to amethyst. Some of these pieces are flat-faced both front and back, while others have faceted backs. All are polished everywhere, to permit backless setting. Many have undercut rims, with the beveled edge on the underside sloping inwards that will allow them to be seated.

Rutilated Quartz There is a lot of quartz on the market, some of it with rutiles. But it is unlikely that you will ever see a selection of this caliber anywhere else, especially since it took me five years of searching to collect these. Their beauty, clarity, and master cuts place them far above the ordinary. Try combining this versatile stone with druzy in black, espresso, or green for a stunning effect. And don't forget that these also can be sandwiched against any background you dream up--textured, patinated or colored metals, PMC, even fabric or woven beads--to provide a whole new look. This is everything I have in stock. Note: Photos show stones under a mix of daylight and halogen light. Unless otherwise noted, stones are polished on all sides. Just for fun, I took some shots of these pieces shown with black druzy, to give you further design ideas.

Faceted Rutilated Quartz You can find faceted Rutilated Quartz on other websites that looks like it's been cut by a beginning hobbyist. These exquisite pieces, on the other hand, were mined and cut in Russia by master artisans. I believe that I might have underpriced them because I can't find anything that is remotely similar to them. They would look spectacular set in gold and accompanied by black druzy.

Woodward Ranch Plume Agate From the collection of Master Cutter Gary Wilson come these beautiful dendritic agates from Texas. Gary sliced the stones thin so that you can see the lovely patterns inside; the more valuable stones contain feathery plumes of black, and some even have sections of shimmering quartz crystal. Gary has mounted them on mother of pearl backs to give them strength and durability.

Regency Rose Plume Agate If you love agates, this one is just gorgeous: Magnificent plumes and swirls of color float through crystalline interiors. Some have areas of translucency, while others contain pockets of crystals. In a couple, the pockets go completely through the stone! All have satin-finish backs.

Agua Nueva Agate This lovely agate caught my eye at the Denver show: Nearly all of them are kissed with a touch of muted lavender, much of it translucent. And while all of them have the layers that are characteristic of agates, in some pieces the cool white layers are interspersed with nearly clear quartz. Very unusual, and classy! Cut by Donald K. Olson.

Amethyst Sage Agate
These stones are the much rarer cousin of Montana Moss
Agate. The translucent areas, instead of being colorless quartz, are the purple
of amethyst! Beautiful black dendrites weave through each stone, and some pieces
have areas of rich yellow-ochre matrix. Note: To illustrate the beautiful
translucency of these stones, I photographed them lit from behind. With front
light, the purples are slightly darker and the ochres are slightly brighter. All
pieces are highly polished on both sides. Click on photos to see these better.

These stones were cut by a master, who
deliberately sliced them thin (2mm thick) so that light could penetrate them and
show off their resplendent colors and patterns. These wonderful photos were
taken by Doug Von Gausig, and they show light coming from both behind and in
front of the stones. An ideal setting would be one without a backing so that the light can shine through.

Also known as Montana Agates, these beauties feature
streaks, dendrites, and beautiful red-gold colors against a milky translucent
background. They are tough stones, because they're mostly quartz, so feel free
to set them in open-back frames. Cut by Montana lapidarist and miner Merlin
DeShaw. TR110 $80.00 TR111 $75.00

Heart of Stone Studio is not a bead site per se, but these
caught my eye at the Tucson Gem Show and I couldn't resist getting them. These
are NOT glass; they are real quartz rock crystal--hefty, smooth and exquisitely
cool to the touch. They are just gorgeous in person and would be fabulous either
alone or strung with other beads.
