On This Page: Shells Tahitian Snow Agate Petoskey Stone Petrified Palmwood Beach Stones How many times have you admired the beauty, color, and form of seashells, but figured that they wouldn't work in your jewelry designs because they were either too big, too fragile, too difficult to work with? Well now, I'm happy to be able to offer you the option of using shells in your work. These are not just any seashells; they are specifically prepared for use as cabochons. Each shell piece here is cut, then mounted on a special mother-of-pearl backing, then sealed for permanence and durability (although I wouldn't suggest using it in heavy-wear items such as belt buckles). Some of these pieces are quite hefty-feeling, so I've included their thickness measurement for you. Because both the fronts and backs are attractive, they can be either bezel-set or wire-wrapped. Now you can add a bit of the beach to your designs! Don't forget you can click on the photos to see closeups of these. Cameo Shell These are so sensuously beautiful that I'm sorry to only have three of them to offer. All have sparkling, highly polished fronts and polished mother-of-pearl backings to give them strength and thickness.

Abalone Drilled Pendants These pendants are just wonderful. All of their surfaces have a slight curve to them, (from the shell they were cut from), but they are set onto white mother-of-pearl backs. The iridescent colors and surface variations are all natural. Drilled and just waiting for you to design fabulous necklaces around them.

Tahitian Snow Agate SOLD OUT: MORE COMING SOON! Lapidarist Donald K. Olson named this stone which he found on a trip to the Far East. It is related to Ocean Jasper, but unlike the usual ocean jasper, it has an agate's silicated glassiness, with ocean colors and flecks of white that can be perceived both on the surface and in its depths, because it is partially translucent! In some lights it is a mossy bluish green; in others, it is primarily teal. It really does conjure up the magic of snow falling over a warm ocean! Click on photos to see details.

Michigan's official state stone is really calcified coral that thrived when the Upper Midwest was part of a shallow inland sea. The coral's name was Hexagonaria, and ancient silts and muds bestow its muted colors. It has a hardness of 4 to 5. These pieces all have a high polish and are wonderful examples of Petoskey. I have tried to show in the photos the color variations from stone to stone.

What fun stuff! The many dots, similar to a leopard's spots, are really the xylem and phloem of the ancient tree, seen in cross section.

Black and Tan Petrified Palmwood More coming Soon! These pieces are so wonderful--they contain the regular tannish spotted stone which grades into a natural black, probably the result of a different mineral solution invading the cells of the trees as they became petrified. The color contrast adds a touch of drama and elegance to these pieces. Click on photos to see these better.

One of my favorite suppliers talked me into taking these, which were collected from the shores of Lake Michigan. Yes, you can pick beach stones up on any beach, but these are sensually smooth to the touch, well-shaped, black, and they're drilled! So, if you don't have access to a drill press, you might want to try one of these. (Click on photo to supersize these).
