Even in the world of designer cabochons, the stones shown on this page are pretty special. If you're a lapidarist, you would be lucky to come across such perfect postcard specimens every once in a while. If you're a jeweler, you have to research who the best dealers are, then stand in line to be sure to be first into a show, because these babies will be snatched up within the first ten minutes. That's how I found these, and now they can be yours, without the wait. Please note: Due to differences in computer screens, we ask that you refer to the written measurements to get an accurate idea of each stone's size. Click on photos to enlarge them to see details.
China Picture Stone ô Biggs and Deschutes Jasper ô Apache Sage Jasper ô Willow Creek Jasper ô Bruneau Jasper ô Deschutes Jasper ô Owyhee Canyon Jasper ô
China Picture Stone (probably also known as: Chinese Painting Jasper) International gem trading means that sometimes things might get altered in translation. The Chinese call a stone that looks extremely similar to this "Chinese Painting Jasper," while the Mexican cutters of this stone call it "China Picture Stone." I can't guarantee that they are from the same mine, but whichever name you append to these, you have to agree that they are pretty amazing. The stones with these images are relatively scarce; I spent a long time sorting through lesser stones to find these lovelies.

Biggs Jasper and Deschutes Jasper These two stones are so similar that I decided to lump them together here. Both are mined in Oregon and both reveal gorgeous landscape images in rich chestnut, tan, and brown hues. To my eye, Deschutes has characteristic deep chestnut brown veins and a predominantly brown color palette, while Biggs can have some lighter creams and greys here and there. Blue Biggs Jasper is distinguished by its blue-grey color and is considered rare because the mine has played out.

These stones are similar in imagery to Bruneau Jasper, but with a different color range--from butter yellows, through pale sages and burgundies, to soft browns. These pieces have a tranquil, lyrical quality. Click on photos for a better look at these.

These are such lovely stones, with soft, smooth patterning. I had originally put them in landscapes because some of them looked like stylized hills, but they also qualify as abstract art. According to the cutter, the ones with richer pinky-ochre coloring are more valuable, but it's really a matter of personal preference. Polished both sides.
