Sculpture When I first became a metalsmith, I began to realize how difficult it is to think and design in three dimensions. Add to that the skill required to turn a nice idea into a beautiful piece of art, and you have the reasons that I really admire sculptors. The pieces on this page were all hand crafted, and most of them are the artist's interpretation of natural forms, using natural materials. They are all exquisite, and many of them are signed by the artist. They make great additions to a home or office, and great gifts. One of each kind is available, unless otherwise noted. (Click on the photos below to enlarge them so that you can see detail.)
Black bear
This graceful bear sculpture captures a polar bear, peering intently into what
must be a crack in the ice where dinner awaits. He is hand-carved from either
soapstone or marble, although the density and polish level of the stone
indicates that it's probably marble., with a fine polish. At first glance, he
looks black, but upon closer inspection, interesting veins of deep green and
grey are revealed. His face is carved with expressive detail that makes him
really special. He measures almost 5 3/4" long and stands a tad over 3" high. He
weighs 1.5 lbs. of solid stone.
Larry Owen bear This original signed sculpture by Larry Owen is a dynamic portrayal of a striding bear. Carved from deep-ochre soapstone flecked with black, it captures the power and beauty of a large animal who can move quickly and gracefully. It exudes a hefty, dynamic energy that belies its size (6" long and 3" high). It's the kind of sculpture that never tires; it is different from every angle and gets richer and richer the more you look. This skilled interpretation of a natural wonder is an original art piece that will look great in any setting. This is an ideal gift for the bear lover, or someone who would appreciate a power totem to inspire them to charge ahead against all odds. IJ-B3 $95.00 About the artist: Larry Owen has lived throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska most of his life. While living in Alaska, he became interested in native carvings of ivory, soapstone and wood. In 1973, he started business as a carver, and received several commissions to do large sculptures in Alaska. He now lives in Oregon with his wife, and creates beautiful carvings out of the soapstone that is indigenous to Oregon.
Native Dancer (Click on the photos to enlarge them so that you can see detail.) This is an original carving in multicolored soapstone and alabaster by world-renowned artist Christopher Olivier. His distinctive style captures the simple joy of Alaskan native life. This dancer will bring delight wherever he goes. He stands 165mnm 6.5"tall, 3" (74mm)wide and weighs 1.8 lbs of solid stone. His face is carved out of alabaster. He carries what appear to be two partridge feathers. He is signed by the artist. IJ-D2 $240.00 Sorry, Sold!
About the artist: Olivier received a classical training in Vienna,
Austria, but his love for native cultures took him to Alaska where he lived for
several years. His classical training enables him to give a special
interpretation of Alaskan themes. His larger pieces sell for tens of thousands
of dollars, and his work is part of collections in North America, Europe,
Australia and Japan.
Handcrafted wood box
When I first saw this "bas-relief" wood box, I was stunned by its beautiful
marriage of artistry and craftsmanship. Called "Silver Creek Moonrise," this
piece was handcrafted by artisans Tom Allen and Deborah Warren, in the Pacific
Northwest. All the woods that make up this box--Black walnut, Shedua, Imbuya,
East Indian Laurel, and bone--are in their natural undyed, unstained, state. The
exotic woods have been obtained from responsibly-managed, renewable supplies.
Rather than using ordinary thin veneers, the wood pieces are at least a
half-inch thick, inlaid in a process that Tom Allen calls "Sculptural Marquetry."

A "savvy shopper" note: I will pay the shipping, handling, and insurance (ground, to lower 48 states) if your order totals more than $200.00--that's a huge savings, especially if you're buying these heavier sculptural items! Navigate to other pages in the catalog by returning to the Main Catalog Page. And, if you're interested in natural forms, you might want to take a look at the Mineral Specimens pages. They are Nature's own sculptures and can make a striking statement in your decor! To check the contents of your shopping cart, click:
